Sign Language Book
Question: What is the best book for teaching yourself sign language? I've been teaching myself sign language online lately, but I would like to have a book so I can learn it offline as well. Any recommendations for some sign language books that make it fast and easy to understand?
Answer: I found that The Joy of Signing by Lottie L. Riekehof was a great help for me. I wouldn't consider it a book to "teach" signing but it's a great referral book. I used it a lot...and still do. One of the characteristics that I liked about the book was that the words had the visual (and if there are more than one "popular" ways to sign it ...they had both), a description of how to sign it and the ORIGIN! It's amazing how much easier it is to remember a sign when you know the origin of the sign.
Question: What is the best baby sign language book/program available? I'd like to get my wife a book or program or whatnot on baby sign language for Christmas. I've taken a couple of ASL courses and would love for us to learn more before our baby comes in April. Any suggestions on the best out there?
Answer: I skipped the actual programs and purchased the Signing Time videos (if you aren't opposed). The videos are great! I know kids under a year who have picked up signs from them. My daughter started watching them around 18 months. At 4, she still enjoys the videos. She picked up signs SO quickly with the videos & reinforcement by us.
We skipped the programs because I didn't see anything better about them than the videos. Also, some aren't aren't actually ASL and we wanted to do actual ASL.
Question: Do you know where I can find Chinese sign language book? I live in Houston, Texas. I been looking through the net and I seem can't find Chinese sign language book. I would love to learn some, I have a friend who is Chinese they are deaf. Can you please help me find some, I searched for hours on net, still couldn't find it.
Can you please give me a name of books or where i can buy it... Thanks for your time reading this.
Answer: try to ask on huxiaoshu@youtube.com she is a deaf chinese language speaker on my zwog1 youtube site good luck.
Question: Where can I find a GOOD French Sign Language Book? I am taking French, and I know American Sign Language... but I want to learn French Sign Language (or LSF as I've heard). I've searched Google, but that wasn't much help for me. Please help me find a good LSF book, Thanks!
Answer: I tried google as well and couldn't seem to find good reference to a book you could use. However, American Sign Language is derived from French Sign Language and are very similar. Here is a link to the French Manual Alphabet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_manual_alphabet
as you can see they are extremely close.
Question: What is the best american sign language book to learn from? I'm planning onstudying to be a teacher for the deaf or a speach path when I'm in college. If I could go ahead and learn the language it would help me a lot. I already have the basic book. I'm looking for a dictionary that will be easy to learn from, and/or a book on grammar. Thanks.
Answer: I'm studying sign language too... isn't it a beautiful language??? I've been using "Sign Language Made Simple" ISBN: 0882435000 It works well for me
Question: What's the best baby sign language book/system and why? My son is 4 1/2 months old, and I've been trying to sign to him more consistently (like signs for mommy, daddy, nursing, and sleep). I have a few books, but have been checking out others on-line and wanted to know what people think are the best ones. Have you used them with your children, and how did they work out? Are there any special techniques you used to teach them? I've noticed his preschooler sister has been picking some of them up, too, so would you have any recommendations for teaching her that would differ from teaching the baby?
Answer: Signing Time. We haven't tried any others but our daughter loves it...is addicted to it in fact. The DVDs are awesome and our local PBS has it on some Saturday mornings. The format is great and the pace is nice too. It's one thing to see it in a book, it's another to see 12 toddlers do it. They use ASL. Start with the Baby Signing time DVDs. They have samples at the website.
Our daughter has been watching them since she was 3 months old and started signing around 7-9 months (wife an I differ on when she was really signing). Now, at 13 months, she has upwards of 20-30 signs and can easily tell us when when she's hungry, is all done, wants more, etc.
We reinforce the signs as often as possible by signing with her when she is not watching the videos.
And for those who think it slows down speech development, she typically says the words at the same time.
Question: What is a good American Sign Language book to carry around and study? Good sign dictionary but small enough to carry around easily?
Answer: How to do the American Sign Language for dummies
Question: Can anyone suggest a good British Sign Language book for beginners? I'm really interested in learning and l am planning to do a course at college next year but i'd like to start learning about it now. I've heard some books are completely useless and over complicated. Anyone know which ones are good and which ones to avoid? I don't just want to learn, I want to understand too.
thanks
