Question: where is there a website that shows you the sign language signs? i want to learn sign language but i can not find a website where they can show me the signs for words. i know the alphabet and the numbers but i don't know how to put together words together in a sentence.
Answer: Book: the Gallaudet dictionary of ASL - it includes a dvd rom of the signs:
http://www.amazon.com/Gallaudet-Dictionary-American-Sign-Language/dp/1563682826/sr=8-1/qid=1160081968/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-0959583-9264944?ie=UTF8&s=books
***but the best websites (which I use as reference to teach ASL classes):
A good site with large, descriptive drawings:
http://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/signs.htm
Good sites with alphabetized video clips:
http://www.aslpro.com/cgi-bin/aslpro/aslpro
http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm

Question: What is a website that shows pictures of different sign language signs? My niece learns sign language at her preschool and was doing a sign today that we couldn't figure out! Her hand was up, fingers straight but sort of a "c" shape with the thumb and index fingers. With her fingers/hand in this position she then kind of twisted her hand back n forth. Does anyone know what this sign means and/or a good website to reference?
Answer: you can download this file
it will show you all of the signs

Question: What is the difference between Signed English & American Sign Language? Are the signs the same? What is the difference between Signed English & American Sign Language? Are the signs the same? Can someone who signs ASL understand SE?
Answer: The big difference between SEE(signed exact english) and ASL is the word order used. ASL has its own word order and syntax and varies greatly from the word order used in english. If they know English they should get the idea but if they are signing back in ASL the person signing SEE will more than likely not understand as easily.
It really depends upon the person, and i would ask the Deaf person if they are OK with you signing in English and not ASL instead of just jumping in with SEE.
Question: What Body language signs show he is interested? What are the body language signs that he is interested that he does unknowingly.
Answer: If he make eyes contact, if he touch your hands, if he pays attention at everything you say... and he ask you out before the end finish that one is a big plus!!
Question: Does it matter if you use American Sign Language signs with the left or right hand? Does it matter if you use American Sign Language signs with the left or right hand or reverse of what is shown with ones that use both hands? For example if they show the right hand going over the left and you do it with the left over the right? I'm just wondering because I'm learning ASL and I'm left handed so some of the signs they show with the right hand I naturally sign with my left. Thank you! <^..^>
Answer: You should use your dominant hand to do the dominant motions. Use your left hand. Do not switch back and forth.
Question: When doing sign language, is it required that you mimic speech with your mouth while doing the signs? I'd like to learn American sign language but I want to keep my mouth closed at all times, is that allowed
Answer: Some professional signers do this as an assistive aid for those who are primarily oralist (i.e., labeled as "lip readers" which is actually "cued speech").
No, one does not have to do this.
namaste.
Question: What are directional signs in American Sign Language? And how are the signs me and you used when using directional signs?
Answer: Directional signs are used mainly for verbs.
For example: If you wanted to sign the simple sentence, "I moved over there", you would sign the word "I", then the sign for "move" would actually move from closest to your body to away from your body; to show that you physically moved from where you are now, to "over there".
Then, of course, if the sentence were, "You moved over here", then the opposite would be signed.
It varies depending on the direction, i.e. moving from East to West, North to South, etc.
Most verbs (not all) can be signed directionally.
Also, it's not just verbs, other types of words can be signed directionally, as well.
i.e. "I hate you", "You hate me", can be signed with directionality.
Question: If your child used baby sign language, at what age did they drop the signs and only speak? My daughter is using less and less signs, the more words she knows. Some words she still does both, though. I was just wondering if you kept teaching the signs or just let it go when they became able to copy the majority of words you teach them.
Answer: My daughter still does both. She says the word and signs them too. She is starting to just say some of the words and not doing the sign for them. She can like yours copy most word I say. I am still doing sign with her and teaching her new signs as well. I would just keeping doing it, signing and talking. It can't hurt, and they loved to learn.
