Teen Hearing Loss
Question: Teens, how does a hearing loss affect you? Okay, I have a hearing loss and I would like to know how a hearing loss affects your relationship with other teens.
Tell your stories.
Thanx!
Actually, I was born with hearing loss.
Answer: Wow, it's nice to hear I'm not the only one.
I have no hearing in my right ear, and limited hearing in my left, and have since birth. I'm really outgoing and hardly ever shut up around my friends, or around adults, but when I'm around people my own age that I don't know very well, I clam right up. I'm really shy about talking to new people, because I'm always afraid that I'll miss hearing something they say, or I won't be able to understand them or something like that. I also prefer to talk to my friends on im, because it's so much easier to read what they say than to try to hear.
But yeah, it really has made me more shy than I think I would probably be if I didn't have any hearing loss.
Question: Hearing loss in teens? I have a ? my son says he starting not to be able to hear properly in his left ear. He listens to music everyday some loud and some with headphones. He cleans his ears weekly. But he has to constantly adjust his pc speakers balance. But he also gets the surround sound in our living room and others. And i was wondering if there were any studies in teens with hearing loss. Or if he just needs to slow it down everyday. Hes only 15
Well he cleans his ears weekly with q tips. And he always brings home the colds from school. But i was just concerned cause i didn't believe him
Answer: You said he cleans his ears weekly but the ears are self cleaning. What is he cleaning his ears with? You should NEVER ever stick anything smaller than your elbow into your ear. You need to take him in to the doc to get his ears checked and then take him to an audiologist to get his hearing checked. You also mention he listens to some of his music loud and uses head phones. Both of these things can cause permanent hearing loss. Tons of teens have hearing loss do to the things you mentioned. Take him to the doc and then to an audiologist and monitor the loudness of his music and excess use of headphones. He is a minor so yes you need to be the parent and set some limits when he is at home. Hearing loss is not fun and is permanent so please take action now before he loses more of his hearing.
Question: Hearing loss, by late teens.? I'm nineteen and I have been gradually losing my sense of hearing over the last few years. What could cause that and are there treatments besides hearing aides?
Answer: There are many causes of hearing loss, including injury, infection, allergy, and genetic predisposition. Some are transient; some are permanent and progressive.
For the best information and advice, have examination(s) and testing done by Board certified ENT specialist.

HELP!!!
are there any websites about this? whats the URL?
Answer: Yes meningitis can cause hearing loss. Meningitis is what made me deaf when I was 2 years old (I'm now 21).
Best thing you can do is to find an audiologist (they're more qualified when it comes to hearing loss and diagnosing it). They can test your hearing and figure out how much of a hearing loss you have, and can help you find the right hearing aids to help you hear. There's different styles of hearing aids available (behind the ear, in the ear, completely in the canal), and different types (analog, digital), and even different colors. You can even have trials with different kinds of hearing aids too, to find which one would be the best for you.
Don't think of hearing loss as a bad thing. Sure, it's difficult at times to make sense of what someone is saying, especially when there's stuff going on (noise or other conversations). But it's not the end of the world. Trust me on this. And as for being a high school student, I never had any issues with people making fun of me, and my hearing loss was NOTICEABLE since I wore FM systems in school to help me hear even better (of course, now there's better technology out there so FM systems are being made much smaller and so on). Sometimes it helps if everyone were more educated about deafness/hearing loss. People who don't know about it, they tend to assume things and even make fun. But usually people who KNOW about it and are educated, they won't bother you about it. That's what I've noticed while growing up and going through the public school system.
http://www.hearingexchange.com is a good website to find resources on hearing loss and such. They have a list of different websites where you can find information, and even a messageboard to post questions on.

Question: Hearing loss question for an assignment? I have to write a paper for a class, really short (500 words).
I was given a case study about a guy....basically stated that he started to experience hearing loss at around age 19 to 20...and he's about 24 or 25 now .
He has no symptoms besides hearing loss
Anyways, one of the questions i have to address is.....give 2 possible reasons for his hearing loss.
1 reason i thought of was noise induced hearing loss.
Having trouble thinking of a second reason.
I ruled out a buildup of earwax or other ailments, because in 5 years, they would have been spotted and cleared up. Also the case study doesn't mention previous sicknesses or anything. So i have to assume he didn't have any sort of ear infection.
I thought of a few hereditary causes...ones that hit in the teens... but they all have symptoms that don't fit the situation.
Any help would be great
Oh and i'm not saying it is NOT hereditary.
Just i couldn't find a hereditary disease that fit the situation.
Answer: Osteosclerosis is a growth of bone on the bones of the middle ear (incus, stapes, and malleus). The growths themselves slowly immobilize the bones thus slowing and eventually stopping the ability to transmit sound.
Meniere's disease affects the inner ear and causes deafness, but it often carries with it vertigo and tinnitis (ringing in the ear) so you may not want to use that.
Acoustic neromas grow in the vestibulococchlear nerve (the one that transmits sound to your brain). They tend to cause deafness and may not have other symptoms at first.
Ototoxicity can also cause hearing loss. This is due to medications that can cause damage to the nerves and render someone deaf. Examples of such include some antibiotics like streptomycin, salicyates like aspirin, some diuretics like lasix, and some chemotherapy treatments (names fail me here).
Trauma such as fracture of the temporal bone or a punctured eardrum can cause deafness.
Earwax can cause deafness if it builds up enough. This is, obviously, easily treated.
I can't remember the name, but there are benign tumors that can grow to the point that they block the ear canal and thus block sound.
As far as my source, growing up visiting many an ear doctor's office and playing with ear models. Life long hearing impairment.

Question: Pre Teen Weight Loss Help!? Okay, im a pre teen and i wanna lose weight. Im getting a Wii Fit but at the moment they are out of stock EVERYWHERE, but I have ordered a Wii and that is supposed to be here soon! So Im tryna cut down on eating, but I have heard that if you eat less calories it stores it as fat. Is this true? And how much should I excercise and HOW should I excercise? What exactly should I have for lunch that I could easily take to school and isnt expensive. Im so coooooooooooooonfuuuuuuuused! So Basically, HELP! Any ideas will be welcome.... Any at all! Any healthy snacks that are good? PLEASE HELP!!! :D
Thanks x
Answer: You dont need to cut down on your food at all, just try to fill up on carbohydrates and stuff such as pasta and bread =) so sandwiches are a good idea and the filling doesnt really matter what it is =)
You should try and do about an hour of good excersise a day.
Say go running for about 20 minutes.... or half an hour.
If you can, go swimming as this is a good excersise for your whole body.
Bouncing on a trampoline is also really good.
Doing about 100 situps a night is good, It may begin to cause pain after you first start if you havent done it before, but it is worth it, as after about a week of doing them everyday, you can actually really notice the more toned slimmer stomach =) more effective =)
if you like porridge, eat it =) it fills you up and is healthy and gives you energy to do more excersise!! =) cereals like you have for breakfast are also good snacks as long as they arent too sugary.
hopefully I have helped =) good luck with your weight loss plan =) xx
Question: Help a teen make a weight loss plan? **posted this is Diet and fitness, but I need a Teens opinion
I'm 13, female, 5'0, and about 130 lb.
I want to loose weight during the summer- maybe 15-20 lb. and I've found a great website to help me, http://teenshealth.org/teen/
bassically the site says things about making a weight loss plan for your body, and I'm not so sure how to do that.
I am cutting down on what I eat, and eating healthy things like whole grain cereal, fruits, veggies, ect. any other ideas on food?
I also need help on different exercizes I could do. I DONT like running, i can walk, and I have heard that 30 min. of running= 10 min of jump roping. Is that true? Plus I don't have a lot of gym equitment around the house so these workouts have to be innovative. I also have a suscription to Lifetime Fitness, and I know i have to go there more often.
I know this is a lot but I am in dire need for a fitness plan. 10 points to the person who best answers all of these questions. thanks!!! <3
Answer: Well I'll tell you what I know.
I hate counting calories, so I do the alternative. I watch what I eat. I replace white bread with whole wheat, do the same with pastas, use less sauce on pastas, don't use dressings on salad, eat vegetables and fruit at every meal, eat fruits and or veggies for snacks, replace sugary drinks with lemon water (homemade), bring my own lunch to school, etc. Just tiny things like those. It's too hard to change our lifestyle completely alone. I don't count calories because it's just too hard and you can't know what calories are in the healthy foods, so it forces you to eat processed unhealthy foods just so you know what calories you're eating.
I hate running myself. It's just too bad on my knees which are injured enough. Jump roping IS good, but not to that much extent. I suggest you jump rope for about 5 minutes, take a stretching break of 30 seconds to one minute, then go for another 5 minutes. You can do that about once a day every day, or 3 -4 times a week. Anything can be used as equipment! Soup cans can be weights, you can stretch, use your tv to do some yoga or pilates, etc etc. Just use your imagination. You don't really need to sign up for any expensive things because weight loss as a teen is easier than as an adult when your fat settles in.
Well, I know a bit more, but I can suggest this site to you, and I can wish you the best of luck!
