Deaf Education
Question: What would be a good product for my Senior Project on deaf education? A product is something that helps the deaf children with deaf education.
Example: Make dog beds and donate them to the Animal Rescue Foundation.
Answer: An idea would be to have your kids interact with the public. Your students could create flyers that have pictures of familiar signs in them and distribute them to members of the public in a downtown area while asking for donations for the Animal Rescue Foundation. The flyers could have pictures of the signs 'Thank you' or something similar. You could accompany your students and be ready to answer any questions.
Question: what kind of careers are there in deaf education? i would really like to have a career in deaf education, or disabled, chilldren and teens, but im not sure what kind there are and which one would be best for me. Question: What exams are required to be certified in deaf education? I am in an Interdisciplinary Program, but I really want to teach deaf ed, what exams must I take to get certified?
Answer: It completely depends on your state's regulations. They vary greatly. Google your state department of education's website. Click on employment or Teach for XXX or whatever other thing that sounds like it. It should be there under alternative or lateral entry programs for career changers. If you can't seem to find it, shoot me an email and tell me your state's name. Some websites are more helpful than others.
You should also be able to locate a college that offers such certification classes. Not all colleges offer all certifications.
Question: Can someone help me find a college with a ASL program and deaf education? I am looking in the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Trying to find the best college in all three states.
Answer: University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma
http://www.usao.edu/deafed/index.htm
University of Tulsa
http://www.cas.utulsa.edu/commdis/
Hope these help, couldn't find any in the other two states.
Question: My daughter wants to pursue Deaf Education as a college major. What is the best USA college? Any advice from people working in this field?
Answer: She needs to look into what is required in the state that she wants to work in. Licensure is what she is ultimately after - not a specific degree from specific university. Some states have gone to a two license options. One for the general classroom where students with hearing problems usually are. She would serve students with learning disabilities, autism, visually impaired, etc. The other option would be serving those with mental retardation and possibly hearing impaired, among other disabilities.
Self-contained deaf classrooms are quickly becoming a thing of the past with technology and the use of translators.
For information that pertains directly to her state of interest, google department of education and the name of her state. Then go for the employment link and there's probably a link to all the colleges that offer licenses or training programs in your state.
Do think about how far away she is from college. More than two years and the licensure options can definitely change. Being a special educator who knows a moderate amount of sign language is always helpful though.
Has she considered speech therapy, too?
Edit - The answer that deaf education is a graduate program is true only in certain states. Like one answerer said UNC-G is an excellent college that offers deaf education at the undergraduate or "A" level.
Question: Which schools in North America offer a program for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing? I'm interested in specializing in education for the deaf and hard of hearing. After I obtain my BEd I'd like to consider moving on to a school that offers a special program for this (I'd prefer a Masters or Bachelors Program rather than certificate or diploma). Does anyone know of a school in Canada or the US that offers this? I've done some internet research but haven't found much.
Answer: California State University Northridge has a good program. CSUN is located in the Los Angeles area and is accessible by public transportation or a student can live on campus.
