When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to three completely different pictures: John Ford's The Searchers, Howard Hawks's Red River, and Hawks's Rio Bravo. About the only thing they all have in common is that they all star John Wayne. But while The Searchers is an epic quest for revenge and Red River is a sweeping cattle-drive drama ("Take 'em to Missouri! Yeeee-hah!"), Rio Bravo is on a much more modest scale. Basically, it comes down to Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne), his sobering-up alcoholic friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the town jail, drinkin' black cofee, shootin' the breeze, and occasionally, singin' a song. Hawks--who, like his pal Ernest Hemingway, lived by the code of "grace under pressure"--said he made Rio Bravo as a rebuke to High Noon, in which sheriff Gary Cooper begged for townspeople to help him. So, Hawks made Wayne's Sheriff Chance a consummate professional--he may be getting old and fat, but he knows how to do his job, and he doesn't want amateurs getting mixed up in his business; they could get hurt. This most entertaining of movies also achieved some notoriety in the '90s when Quentin Tarantino (director of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Jackie Brown) revealed that he uses it as a litmus test for prospective girlfriends. Oh, and if the configuration of characters sounds familiar, it should: Hawks remade Rio Bravo two more times--as El Dorado in 1967, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan; and as Rio Lobo in 1970, with Wayne, Jack Elam, and Christopher Mitchum. --Jim Emerson

John Wayne is great as usual. This movie is very quotable and also comical. Pick this one up.

This is the kind of film that can change your bad mood in to a good one,Howard Hawks Rio Bravo is the definitve and most influential Western, Directors like Walter Hill John Carpenter and Quentin Tarantino , have praise his influence in all of there work.
and now with the advent of tecnology, Rio Bravo in Blue Ray is a must Have

This movie was all around great. Every character pulled there own weight and the acting was good.
When i saw that ricky nelson and dean martin were in this movie i was kind of iffy, but afterwards i wasnt, the acting in these two was something i didnt expect at all, they were just good.
Overall, This movie can be very chill and relaxing and also very suspenseful.
This is one of John Wayne's best movie and is a must see

Other than "How the West Was Won," "Rio Bravo" is my favorite western. It is my favorite John Wayne western (and thats saying a lot) and my favorite Howard Hawks film. The creation of "Rio Bravo" is Hollywood legend. Supposedly Wayne and Howard Hawks were disgusted with the film "High Noon." They did not like the Marshal, Gary Cooper, begging the townspeople for aid in fighting the villains on their way to town. They also did not like Coopers throwing his badge away at the end. They wanted a film of just the opposite with the lawman turning down assistance from well-meaning amateurs who want to aid him in keeping the villain, a rich rancher's obnoxious brother, in jail awaiting the U.S. Marshal. (Wayne is the town sheriff, John T. Chance.)
Assiting Wayne are former deputy, now town-drunk "Dude" (Dean Martin,) young gunfighter "Colorado" (Ricky Nelson,) crippled deputy "Stumpy" (Walter Brennan) and a very attractive female gambler in town "Feathers" (Angie Dickinson.) Wayne is also offered aid by a friend Pat Wheeler (Ward Bond) who is soon shot in the back for his trouble. This causes Bond's employee Colorado (Nelson) to join the team.
I love everything about this film: the action is great, the dialogue is terrific (I never tire of it) and the acting on every level superb. Wayne is his usual great self as the put-upon town sheriff, Chance. Dean Martin in one of first solo dramatic roles since his split with Jerry Lewis acquits himself nicely. Nelson also does a nice job as Colorado. But it is Brennan and Dickinson who really steal the picture. Angie in her first major role really holds her own against the veterans in the cast. Not only is she wonderful to look at but she is both funny and serious in various parts of this film. As the potential love-interest for the Duke, while she is obviously quite a bit younger, she is still believable and terrific. Finally there is Brennan as the deputy "Stumpy." How this man did not win a best supporting oscar for this film I will never know. (I don't even think he was nominated.) He is incredibly amusing. The villains are played by Warner Bros. contract players John Russell as the rich rancher "Nathan Burdette," (not long afterward Russell would begin a nice run as Marshal Dan Troop in the excellent Warner Bros. western "Lawman,") and Claude Akins as his vile younger brother "Joe."
A lot of people criticise a nice sing-along between Dino and Ricky Nelson in the jail as a blatant attempt by Warner Bros. to sell some records that would be released as singles. (The Duke wisely does not join in although Walter Brennan does!) I love this scene and never fail to enjoy it. The great soundtrack was by the legendary film composer Dimitri Tiompkin who a year later would compose the magnificent score for Wayne's "The Alamo."
This film was a great success. Hawks liked it so much he basically remade it in 1966 as "El Dorado." In that Wayne played gunfigher "Cole Thornton" who is assisting the drunken sheriff played by Robert Mitchum. They are assisted by a young James Caan in the Nelson role (now named "Mississippi") and the fantastic Arthur Hunnicutt as the ex-indian-fighting deputy "Bull Harris." (Hunnicutt is almost as good in this film as Brennan was in "Rio Bravo." They both steal every scene they are in.) I love "El Dorado" but I love "Rio Bravo" just a little more. Hawks went to the well one more time in 1970 with "Rio Lobo." However it is nowhere as good as these two.
Warner Bros. initially released this as a nothing DVD with no extra features. For years I could not believe they would treat this film classic this way. They finally woke up and rereleased it in this beautiful double-disc set with numerous special features, retrospectives and audio commentary by John Carpenter and Richard Schickel. There are also small reprints of the original lobby card set and a small reproduction of the Dell comic book. This great film has since been released on blu-ray as well.
As stated, I love this film and despite its rather long length, I never tire of it. It is a joy from start to finish.
